You need to Activate a user on ADE to open the DRM protected books.
please go through the https://helpx.adobe.com/digital-editions/using/faq.html about ADE, specially the questions related to activations.

Yes, the files are successfully downloaded to Documents->Digital Editions.
On Mac - I installed ADE (Adobe Digital Editions) (latest version 4.0) I
also tested with all earlier versions (1.7-3.0) of ADE.
The issue is that ADE crashes when transferring .acsm file formats. I don't
get any error messages with versions 3.0 & 4.0, however, on earlier
versions of ADE i get this error (please see screenshot). The issue only
happens with Public Library E-books (From Overdrive) - I am able to transfer purchased books.
I tested on windows platform and everything works fine - I am able to transfer files without it crashing

Thank you for your answer, and I'm sorry to trouble you more, but although I do have an active Adobe account, and although I just uninstalled and reinstalled ADE and made sure my computer is registered on it (it is) - I am still getting the same message when I try to read the epub book I bought. What am I doing wrong?
I went over every single question on the Help about this issue, as you suggested, but didn't find an answer that could help me.

I can't use ebooks associated to 2 different Adobe IDs. My reader is a Sony PRS-650 and the ebooks are in EPUB format protected by DRM
Not yet... that's interesting. I wonder if it's some as-yet unidentified bug.
I have authorized my PC so that I can do what I need to do, I have un-authorized and re-authorized my computer. I am now getting "Please authorize your computer first" error messages. I find this to be annoying. Anyone with ideas or suggestions?

I purchased some ebooks from BPP publications which requires Adobe Digital Editions for opening. I created the Adobe ID and downloaded the files. The publisher allows to use the product on three machines. Now I want to use the ebooks downloaded on my laptop on my Samsung Galaxy S5 phone. how can I use it?

I'm having the same issue. I also tried to "Erase Authorization", but it wont let me do that either.
I review books for authors and I have to be able to transfer the books from the computer to my Nook. Are they ever going to update the program to work for the Nook Galaxy Tab 4? It is DRIVING ME NUTS! It should be functional as technology grows.
Downloaded Digital Editions to my mac, because already have overdrive on my ipad and want to read books across both, but after downloading a book, got the message "Error getting License. License Server Communication Problem: E_LIC_ALREADY_FULFILLED_BY_ANOTHER_USER". Is this me, and if so how do I navigate this?U

When I try to download a book I get the "Error getting License. License Server Communication Problem: E_ACT_NOT_READY" message. So I try to erase the authorization as I see instructed, but it keeps telling me my password is wrong. I've verified the password repeatedly.
I had ADE 3 installed and without uninstalling it I ran ADE 4.Then I uninstalled ADE 3. I try to open an ascm file and an error appears: "check activation". I looked for solutions on the forum and I've seen the recomendation of de authorizing the computer. But it doesn't let me.
FYI I was able to delete the file and reauthorize using an overdrive account (I don't trust the adobe ID to work properly) and this time I was able to load my book without much issue.
