Well...I did all that and nothing.  So I uninstalled ADE and re-installed, authorized it on my computer...and now I can't authorize my Kobo.  I think, after I've completed number 12 on your list, I'm going to jump up and down many times on my Kobo and go to my bookshelves and pull off one of those big papery things I used to read (the ease of use of these is astounding!).  If it wasn't for the fact that I've purchased so many ebooks...

ADE not authorizing

I am unable to authorize my Windows 7 laptop with ADE.  I have version 2.0.1, which I installed earlier today.  My adobe Id is working since I have also reset my password today.  However when I clieck authoze after entering my credentials, i receive the error "the vendor account you entered is not associated with the item you are trying to open. try again"

does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve this?  thx

That message usually comes when you try to access a book, not when you authorize.

What exactly do you mean by  when I clieck authoze after entering my credentials.

Basically entering your credentials is authorizing.

Without more detail impossible to be sure, but two things that often help ....

Two possible solutions ...

1) ~~~~~

Sometimes ADE gets its registration/activation confused and in a semi-authorized state.

Uninstalling and reinstalling does not help.

Unfortunately, it often then gives misleading error messages about what is wrong.

A common incorrect message informs you that the ID is already in use on another computer and cannot be reused.

This can often be resolved by completely removing any authorization using ctrl-shift-D to the Library screen on ADE (cmd-shift-D if on Mac).

Restart ADE, and then reauthorize with your (old) Adobe ID.

In extreme cases on the mac, the following extra step has helped some people.  Navigate to /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions and drag the activation.dat file to the trash. If you are using 10.7, see Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 Lion. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1265248?tstart=0

2) ~~~~~~~~~

There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0 (and 2.0.1).  Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.

(You can have them both installed at once if you like.)

Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

http://helpx.adobe.com/digital-editions/kb/cant-install-digital-editio ns.html

The forum software is sometimes corrupting the link above.  There shouldn't be a blank in 'editio ns.html'.  The following redirects to the same page: http://tinyurl.com/diged172

Some people have found ADE trying to upgrade automatically.

It appears (not 100% sure) that if you install ADE2.0 as a new install (not as an upgrade) that your 1.7.2 will continue to run.

Probably best to say no if 2.0.x installation asks if you want to migrate your library.

Is it possible to read the book on ADE (Digital Editions) itself?

Try finding the .epub file on your computer ... probably in C:\Users\<userid>\Documents\My Digital Editions

and copying it using file manager to the mouted drive, and seeing if you can read it on the device then.

Ow, all I can suggest now (if you haven't already jumped up and down on it too much) is the hardest possible factory reset of the Kobo;

plus most of the steps above again.

Or maybe the Kobo people will come up with something useful?

Good luck ....

Thanks for your help, sjpt.  I've done the factory reset and still nothing.  I await pearls of wisdom from Kobo...  You, however, have been extremely helpful!

Changing my Adobe ID...having problems.

I have since changed my e-mail and updated my Adobe ID on the website. However, I recently recieved an update on my Nook and it won't let me read the library eBooks I've downloaded. I have the program Adobe Digital Edition 2.0. When I try to re-authorize my device, the only option it gives me for my Adobe ID is my old e-mail address (old Adobe ID). How can I change this? I've tried deleting the program and re-downloading it...nothing has worked so far. When I try to open the PDF or EPUB files I've downloaded from the library I get this message:

Error Dialog User not activated.

Any help would be appreciated.

One very last resort ...

If you can still read the books on the main computer, you should be able to DRM strip them using a program such as epubee.

You will then be able to read them on any device.

I do NOT advocate using such code to get around the valid limitations placed on a DRM book.

However, where the problem arises only because of the ineptness of Adobe's ADEPT DRM infrastructure and its implementation,

such a measure is totally justifiable.

It is probably down to a memory of the old registration somehwere, either on ADE (Digital Editions) or the Nook or both.

Try the following:  Some of the steps are probably unnecessary, but depends on the details which ones.

  1. ctrl-shift-D to ADE to deauthorize ADE itself (cmd-shift-D on Mac)
  2. ctrl-shift-E to ADE with the Nook plugged in to deauthorize the Nook (cmd-shift-E on Mac)
  3. restart ADE
  4. authorize ADE with your new email and password (menu-Help-Authoirze Computer)
  5. copy the authorization to the Nook (menu-help-Authorize Device)

There are quite a few bugs in ADE2.0.

If the above doesn't work, it may be that the Nook update has somehow stirred one of them.

In that case, try the older more reliable 1.7.2.

  3. ADE neu starten
  4. ermächtigen ADE mit Ihrem neuen E-Mail und Passwort (Menü-Hilfe-Authoirze Computer)
  5. Kopieren Sie die Genehmigung an das Gerät (Menü-help-Autorisieren Device)

Just to check: you have not created a new Adobe ID, just a new password for the old ID?

Try the following:  Some of the steps are probably unnecessary, but depends on the details which ones.

ctrl-shift-D to ADE to deauthorize ADE itself (cmd-shift-D on Mac)

ctrl-shift-E to ADE with the device plugged in to deauthorize the device (cmd-shift-E on Mac)

restart ADE

authorize ADE with your new email and password (menu-Help-Authoirze Computer)

copy the authorization to the device (menu-help-Authorize Device)

If all else fails I'll try that.  I'm still trying to download the Kobo desktop application.  Yesterday it just wouldn't download - today it's telling me it will take an hour to download!  Can we say...there's something wrong with the app?!!!!

How does one put ADE books onto the micro-sd (extended memory) that is optional with KOBO Touch.  It  seems I can only move DRM protected items to the e-reader's own memory and not to the extended one.
